Training & Networking Opportunities
There is an array of training and networking opportunities available for our students, such as Q&A sessions with the CEO, knowledge sharing sessions, investment club, reading club, and public speaking club.
The Location
Victoria is situated on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, surrounded by ocean and mountains, while boasting the most moderate climate in Canada. Our office is in the heart of the city, walking distance to historic and popular tourist landmarks, local favourite eateries and amenities.
Note: For those coming from outside Victoria, BC, we offer a travel allowance to help with the move.

BCI is one of Canada’s largest institutional investors with a growing global footprint. We are hiring in all areas of our corporation and we often hire students from our co-op & internship program. In the past 8 years, over 100 students have remained with BCI as employees.
The Students We Hire

We welcome more than 100 students each year from across Canada, all studying various disciplines such as: business, communication, computer science, economics, engineering, finance, law, and math.

Students are hired year-round, typically for four-month work terms. Students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program as well as new graduates are welcome to apply to our co-op & internship opportunities. We do not require students to be part of a registered co-op program or be returning to school.

Below are answers to the most common questions we receive from students and recent graduates about our co-op and internship program.

When do co-op and intern job postings go live?

Co-op and intern jobs are posted approximately four months ahead of the start date; January for the summer term (May start), May for the fall term (September start), and September for the winter term (January start).

For work terms in our asset classes, co-op and intern jobs are posted approximately eight months in advance.

How do I apply for positions?

Apply directly or through your university’s co-op/career portal – both platforms provide access to available job openings and the necessary instructions for submitting a complete application. Be sure to carefully review the requirements for each position and send all requested documents to ensure a successful application process.

What can I expect during the recruitment process?

Our hiring managers are responsible for shortlisting and interviewing candidates. If the hiring manager is interested in your application, you can expect to be contacted for an interview one to four weeks after the job posting closes. Since we recruit students from across Canada, we generally conduct virtual interviews via MS Teams. Our hiring managers may ask you to complete a case study or an assignment (this is an established practice for roles in our asset classes). Possessing the legal ability to work in Canada is a requirement for being employed as a co-op student or intern at BCI.

Our HR (Human Resources) Campus team gets involved at the offer stage. As part of our offer process, you will be asked to provide references and information related to background checks.

Do I have to be a student? What if I recently graduated?

Students and recent graduates (within one year of graduation) are welcome to apply for co-op and internship opportunities. We do not require students to be part of a registered co-op program or to return to school after the work term.

What is the expected length and period of the work term?

We offer three work terms per year: winter (January to April), summer (May to August), and fall (September to December). In total, students can take part in our co-op and internship program for a maximum of three terms (or 12 months).

To what extent will I be involved on the team?

Co-op students and interns work closely with our professionals to support BCI’s mission of ensuring the financial security of over half a million British Columbians, including teachers, firefighters, and city workers.

You will gain hands-on industry experience at one of Canada’s largest institutional investors, working on projects that have a direct impact on the financial well-being of our clients. We value the contributions of our co-op students and interns and provide them with meaningful, impactful work that enhances their professional development.

What opportunities does BCI offer during the work term?

We provide our co-ops and interns with many networking, learning, and growth opportunities to help them excel during their work term. Some of these opportunities include Investment Club, Talking with Strangers and Talking Heads Speaking Club, which all foster collaboration and skill development. Our coffee chat culture and informal mentorship programs encourage relationship-building and knowledge sharing across the organization. Our Public Markets Bootcamp is another valuable learning opportunity that helps public markets students develop their financial modeling skills and more.

In addition to these opportunities, we offer online learning resources and a dedicated co-op/intern-led learning hub to support continued education and professional development. Furthermore, BCI is continually growing and transforming. We often hire students from our co-op and internship program for permanent positions, offering paths for career advancement within the organization.

How can I learn more about a role?

Candidates can register for Coffee Chat with the Campus Team, a virtual event we offer three times a year during posting periods that provides an informal setting to ask questions. We also organize on-campus visits throughout the year, enabling us to connect with and help students gain insights into the roles, culture and work environment.

What is the maximum number of work terms I can complete?

As a co-op student or intern, the maximum amount of time you can spend in our co-op and internship program is three work terms (or 12 months).

Does BCI help with living arrangements?

BCI does not directly provide housing for students, however, we do offer resources to assist you in finding suitable housing options near the office for the work term.

We invite our successful co-op and intern candidates to join an internal Facebook group, where you can connect with other co-op students, interns, and BCI staff who can share information and suggestions about finding accommodations. We also have a partner company we work with to help students find and secure furnished rentals.

What are the working hours and work location?

Co-op work terms and internships involve full-time work from Monday to Friday for a duration of four, eight or twelve months. Our co-op and intern roles are primarily based out of our head office in Victoria, BC. Most roles require four days of in-office work with the ability to work remotely from home one day per week, however, some roles require co-op students and interns to work from the office five days per week.
