Director, Stewardship
Location: Victoria
Monika Freyman joined BCI in 2026. She leads BCI’s stewardship program, driving meaningful engagement with portfolio companies, boards, and global standard-setters. As one of Canada’s largest institutional investors, managing $313.7 billion in assets as of March 31, 2026, BCI uses its investor rights and influence to protect and enhance overall long-term value for clients and beneficiaries, including the common economic, social, and environmental assets on which their interests depend.
Monika brings over 20 years of sustainability experience, beginning her career with a research project at Harvard Kennedy School that helped lay the foundation for the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB). Later, at Ceres, she worked with global asset owners on issues such as climate change, the development of a green bond market, and the establishment of a global investor collaboration on water stewardship. After returning to Canada, Monika led sustainable investing initiatives at Mercer and then at Addenda Capital, where she focused on supporting asset owners across Canada in developing and advancing their sustainability, climate, and Indigenous reconciliation goals. This work included promoting strong proxy voting practices and actively engaging with companies, standard-setters, and policymakers on environmental, social, and governance issues.
Monika holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Science from Loyola University Chicago. She is also a CFA charterholder.
