Jeff Coates

Location: VictoriaJeff Coates joined BCI in 2016 and is a Director in the Infrastructure & Renewable Resources group. With $295 billion in assets under management as of March 31, 2025, BCI is one of Canada’s largest institutional investors within the global capital markets, $32.2 billion of which is managed by the I&RR team.
Jeff has been involved in a number of direct equity and debt investments, and fund commitments, with a heightened focus on the transportation and data infrastructure sectors. Jeff recently returned to Victoria from London after completing a secondment to support the opening of BCI’s new office.
Formerly a Vice-President in Investment Banking at BMO Capital Markets in Vancouver, Jeff advised Canadian companies on a range of mergers & acquisitions, and debt and equity financing transactions. Prior to joining BMO Capital Markets, Jeff worked for a number of years in the mining sector as a Metallurgist and Minerals Processor in operations and process design, including with Fluor Corporation and Rio Tinto.
Jeff holds an MBA from the Sauder School of Business and a BEng (Chemical Engineering) / BBus (Management) from RMIT University, Australia.
Jeff serves on the board of Eku Energy, a globally diversified, technology-enabled energy storage business. He is also responsible for BCI’s investment in Endeavour Energy, a regulated electricity distribution network in New South Wales, Australia. Previously, he served on the boards of Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Management and Pacific National Rail, both Australian assets.
